Partnerships
President Veitch and Dean Turenne meet members of the GEAR UP staff at the Apply to Oxy workshop.
Our partnerships will emphasize the value of a post-secondary education by promoting community engagement, civic responsibility, self empowerment, education, and leadership in adherence to Occidental’s mission.

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) 4 LA is a federally funded program that works with youth in the Belmont and Kennedy Zones of Choice to significantly increase student success in high school and persistence in college. The program also seeks to increase college and career awareness for students and parents. It provides knowledge of the admission process and the college experience. As a partner to GEAR UP 4 LA, Occidental College provides support for program goals by providing tutor-mentors for the cohort schools and hosting GU4LA students and families on campus several times a year. The goal is to improve college readiness and to give students positive role models.

The Eagle Rock Title One Tutoring Program gives Oxy students the opportunity to assist teachers at Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School by working in the classroom during regular school hours. The program provides services for approximately 600 students through in-class tutoring and mentoring.

Mustangs on the Move is a program that provides enrichment activities to students at John Muir High School. Oxy students participate as mentors/ tutors in an after school homework assistance program. This program not only serves as a basis for academic success, but also provides a safe space for students to congregate after school.
