Commencement Plans Unchanged Despite Wet Conditions

May 15, 2011

Occidental College's 2011 Commencement ceremony will proceed as scheduled today at 10 a.m. in Occidental's outdoor Remsen Bird Hillside Theater, despite some light rain that fell during the early morning hours.

The rain trailed off by 8:30 a.m., and weather radar shows that the front has moved through Los Angeles and is heading off to the east.

"Conditions are a bit damp, but our luck seems to be holding: we have never been rained out in the 85 years Commencement has been held in the Hillside Theater," said Director of Communications Jim Tranquada.

Today's ceremony features remarks by Samantha Power, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Harvard professor, and outspoken advocate for human rights.
