December Concert Schedule Announced
From jazz to classical to holiday favorites, Occidental College’s Music Department is offering concerts sure to please every music lover.
The Occidental College Glee Club will perform its popular free holiday concerts on Friday, Nov. 30 at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Eagle Rock and Saturday, Dec. 1. at Herrick Chapel on the College campus at 1600 Campus Road, Eagle Rock. Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. The holiday concerts will combine well-known carols and songs with sacred pieces spanning 500 years, from Byrd to Rachmaninoff to L.A.’s own Morten Lauridsen. “This delightful program is just over an hour in length, great for the whole family, and sure to inspire holiday cheer,” says Glee Club Director Jeffrey Bernstein.
The Pasadena-based Caltech-Occidental Symphony Orchestra, under the musical direction of conductor Allen Robert Gross, begins its 2007-2008 season on Dec. 1 with a concert featuring Tchaikovsky’s explosive Symphony No. 5. The program will also include Collage: Boogie by Larsen and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 with soloist Junko Garrett. The concert on Sat., Dec. 1 will be at 7:30 pm at Caltech’s Ramo Auditorium at 1200 E. California Blvd., Pasadena. The program will be repeated on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3:30 p.m. at Occidental’s Thorne Hall. The concerts are free and will be followed by receptions open to the public.
The Occidental College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Tim Emmons, will present a free concert on Dec. 4 in the College’s Bird Studio. The concert will feature works by Count Basie, Miles Davis, Bill Holman, Freddie Hubbard, and others.
Finally, the Occidental Master Chorale with perform an all-Beethoven program with the Pasadena Symphony at 8 p.m. on Dec. 8 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium at 300 E. Green St., Pasadena. The concert will feature the composer’s Symphonies No. 1 and No. 9. The performances will feature soloists Angela Meade, Tracy Van Fleet, Randall Bills, and Jinyoung Jang.
