Fai Named to International Teams
Occidental swimming star Dickson Fai has been selected to the Hong Kong World University Games Team, which will compete in Izmir, Turkey, on Aug. 11-21. Fai, an undeclared major from Hong Kong, also has been invited to swim in the East Asian Games in Macau on Nov. 1-6.
Last season as a freshman, Fai set Occidental records in the individual 100-yard backstroke (50.45), the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.67), and the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.23). His times also rank seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (47.56) and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.12). Additionally, his 200 backstroke mark established a new Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record. Fai’s swimming acumen made him the first All-American swimmer at Occidental since Ed Bedford ’92.
In the World University Games, Fai is expected to swim backstroke in the 50, 100 and 200-meter distances, as well as compete in relays. At the East Asian Games, he plans to compete in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke and the 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle relays.
“This is certainly the highest international experience anyone in my tenure at Occidental has achieved,” said 16-year swimming and diving coach Peggy Carl. “His teammates and I are all very proud and wish him the very best luck.”
