Hoffman Named Athletic Director
Occidental College head women’s basketball coach Jaime Hoffman has been appointed athletic director at Occidental, effective Jan. 1. Hoffman has served as interim director since July 1.
From all accounts and from my own observations, Jaime has done a truly outstanding job as interim athletic director," outgoing Occidental President Susan Prager said in a Dec. 29 e-mail announcing the move.
"I'm excited about it," Hoffman, 35, said in an interview. "It's a tremendous opportunity. I really believe in Occidental and in the direction of our department. I've been doing the job for six months, and to now have a little clarity as to the length of my term gives me the opportunity to tackle the projects we've begun and see them through." Hoffman says she will evaluate whether to continue as the women's basketball coach at the end of the season.
Hoffman’s appointment has the strong support of members of the faculty athletic committee, current NCAA faculty representatives and the immediate past longtime NCAA representative, as well as that of senior administrators, according to Prager.
"Jaime well understands the importance of our academic mission and how it must be furthered and supported as we also pursue excellence in athletics," Prager said. "She has already taken steps to address gender equity issues. She is actively working to consider options for how Occidental might dramatically improve its indoor athletics facilities and build a new pool suitable for water polo and the swimming and diving program. She has furthered a team spirit in the department, reorganized some of our efforts, and significantly improved the club sports program."
Hoffman has been at Occidental for three years and has more than 10 years' experience working in intercollegiate athletics, including at Boston's Newbury College, Montclair State University in New Jersey and Regis College in Weston, Mass., serving as head women's basketball coach, a professor and an administrator. She has also completed stints as head softball and head women's tennis coach at the collegiate level.
Beyond the court, she has been responsible for delegating assignments to assistant coaches and planning, scouting and coordinating all aspects of intercollegiate athletic teams. Additionally, she has extensive experience in budgeting, marketing, fundraising, and alumni relations.
