John Slaughter Returns Jan. 25
President Emeritus John Brooks Slaughter will return to Occidental on Thursday, Jan. 25 for the unveiling of his official presidential portrait.
A special program will be held at 11:30 a.m. in Thorne Hall with faculty, alumni, staff and trustee representatives paying tribute to Dr. Slaughter, who led the College from 1988 through 1999. Dr. Slaughter also will speak. An informal reception and light lunch will follow the event on the Thorne Hall patio.
A breakfast reception with Dr. Slaughter for alumni will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Johnson Student Center’s Morrison Lounge – ideal for those alumni whose commitments make it impossible for them to attend the mid-day program. Occidental faculty will have the opportunity to meet separately with the president emeritus from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., also in Morrison Lounge.
An electrical engineer and former director of the National Science Foundation, Dr. Slaughter has served as president and CEO of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering since June 2000. He was named Scientist of the Year at the 2004 Emerald Honors Conference.
