Oxy to Host Renowned Dell’Arte Theater Company
Occidental College will host the Southern California premiere of the internationally renowned Dell’Arte Company’s The Golden State Feb. 1-2 at the Keck Theater.
Dell’Arte will offer workshops for students in addition to their two performances while in residence.
The theater company, based in Blue Lake, near Eureka, hopes to establish an ongoing presence in Southern California with its Occidental residence and subsequent three-week run at 24th Street Theatre in Los Angeles.
Dell’Arte commissioned company member Lauren Wilson to write The Golden State, which first opened in Blue Lake in 2004. The play, a comedic adaptation of Molière’s The Miser, presents a California family led by a rich, elderly widow who hoards her fortune.
“Through all the absurdities of the play, a portrait of a California emerges that has little in common with the sunny ‘Golden State’ of tourist brochures and civic boosterism,” says playwright Wilson. “As is always true with Molière, this inherently comic tale has a tragic heart.”
Performances of The Golden State will take place at the Keck Theater, on Occidental’s campus on Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18; groups of 10 or more and non-Occidental students are $10; Occidental alumni, faculty and staff are $12.50; and Occidental students get in free with ID. To purchase tickets, call 323-259-2922 or visit http://www.oxybookstore.com (beginning Jan. 16). Tickets purchased by phone or online are to be picked up at the Keck Theater will-call window. Tickets can also be purchased at the Keck Theater box office.
The performances by and the residency of the Dell’Arte Company at Occidental College are made possible by the G. William Hume Fellowship in the Performing Arts, the result of a generous gift from the G. William Hume Trust. Having earned a master’s degree in composition from Occidental College in 1952, Bill Hume ’50 was an Occidental faculty member who taught music, speech and history. He also served the College as dean of students and director of Thorne Hall.
Occidental is located at 1600 Campus Road in Eagle Rock. Directions to the college and campus map can be found at www.oxy.edu/x119.xml.
