Seven New Trustees Join Occidental’s Board

 

Adamson '84 is the money manager for Oprah Winfrey. He was the chief investment officer for developer and philanthropist Eli Broad and his foundation before Winfrey hired Adamson as the chief investment officer for OW Management, LLC, her family business. Previously, he advised Texas billionaire Lee Bass and worked at the global consulting firm McKinsey & Company. The magazine Institutional Investor named Adamson the "large foundation manager of the year" in 2010. After receiving his bachelor's degree in economics from Occidental, Adamson graduated with an MBA from Stanford in 1988.

Anderson '63 is an attorney who retired recently after a 40-year career specializing in environmental law and land-use planning law. He started his career as an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, working on civil, white-collar crime and environmental law prosecutions. After getting his master's degree, Anderson served as the first general counsel of the California Air Resources Board and a visiting professor of law at the University of Wyoming College of Law. In addition to serving on Occidental's board, Anderson serves on other civic and philanthropic boards such as the California Nature Conservancy, the national Land Trust Alliance (board chair), the Wood River Land Trust, Housing Trust Fund of Santa Barbara County, and the Lobero Theatre Foundation.

Edgerton '67 is the secretary-treasurer and director of the Edgerton Foundation, a family foundation dealing with security issues, the environment, and sustainable energy. The foundation also supports artistic, educational, religious, and cultural institutions in Los Angeles and funds new American plays. Edgerton was a substitute teacher for Los Angeles public schools for many years, and worked as an actress and production assistant for regional theater groups and independent film production companies. More recently, she worked in real estate and property management. Edgerton earned a bachelor's degree in drama and French from Occidental as well as an M.A. in drama. Her mother, Antoinette Dungan '33, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Occidental. She and her husband, Bradford, established the Antoinette and Vincent Dungan Lectureship on Energy and the Environment in honor of her parents.

Barbara Kemp P'04 recently retired as a Manhattan prosecutor in charge of federally funded community crime reduction programs and is now the vice president of the Scarsdale Public School Board. She also serves on the board of the Yale Westchester Alumni Assn. Past civic work includes serving on the boards of the Scarsdale Synagogue-Tremont Temple and the Overhill Neighborhood Assn. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years. Kemp graduated from Yale and Boston University School of Law. She and her husband, Gil, have established three endowed scholarships at the College.

Dr. Rubin has more than 25 years of experience and expertise in the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology. Until July 2009, he was the president and chief executive officer of Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals, a Cambridge, Mass.-based company that is developing a new class of medicines that treat disease by activating the body's pathways to shut off inflammation. He maintains a stake in the company as a partial owner. Prior to Resolvyx, Rubin served as president and CEO of Lexington, Mass.-based Critical Therapeutics, and executive vice president of research and discovery of Sepracor, now Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc., in Marlborough, Mass. Rubin received a medical degree from Rush University's medical school after graduating cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biology from Occidental.

Rugani '75 is a retired independent financial advisor who spent more than two decades in the investment banking industry-most recently as managing director of Cowen & Company. Before that, he worked at Lehman Brothers and L.F. Rothschild, Unterberg, Towbin. He started his career at the management-consulting firm McKinsey & Company. For the last seven years Rugani has been on the board of trustees of the Bronxville (N.Y.) schools, most recently as its vice president. He also served as a member of the alumni advisory committee of the Yale School of Management and on Occidental's capital campaign advisory committee. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College, and was the first Occidental student to receive the Luce Scholarship- a nationally competitive fellowship program to enhance the understanding of Asia among potential leaders. In 1980, Rugani earned an MBA/MPPM from Yale.

Janette Sadik-Khan '82 serves as the commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation. Since her appointment in 2007, she has implemented an ambitious program to improve safety, mobility and sustainability throughout New York City. Before joining the city, Sadik-Khan was a senior vice president for the U.S. transit market for Parsons Brinckerhoff, a leading international engineering firm. She also served as a deputy administrator for the Federal Transit Administration. She is president of the National Assn. of City Transportation Officials, chair of the Transportation Research Board's committee on transportation issues in major U.S. cities, and chair of Reconnecting America. She is also the incoming president of the American Assn. of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Sadik-Khan is on the boards of the Regional Plan Assn., Women in Transportation Seminar, and the Center for Transportation Excellence. She serves on several committees of the American Public Transit Assn. and has published widely on transportation policy, planning, and finance and project management. After graduating cum laude with a bachelor's degree in political science, Sadik-Khan received a law degree from Columbia University in 1987. She received an honorary degree from Occidental in March 2010, when she was the keynote speaker for the Antoinette and Vincent M. Dungan Lecture on Energy and the Environment.
