Sixth Annual Film Festival Features Student Auteurs
The sixth annual Oxy Film Festival will showcase the work of the next generation of young filmmakers on Wednesday, April 1.
Eight short films by Occidental College students will vie for first-, second-, and third-place prizes to be announced at the 7 p.m. screening in Johnson Hall 200 on the Occidental campus. A 10 p.m. screening will follow. The student-run festival is free and open to the public.
Featured at the Festival will be Men Are Dogs by Zak Stoltz ’09; The Sun Sets on Old Man West by Lucas Clark ’09; Into the Concrete by Max Davis ’09; Canadese by Gabe Feinberg ’10 and Kristine Chong ’10; El Músico de Michoacan by Gerry Maravilla ’09; Never Wear Your Curlers to the Laundromat by Riley Hooper ’09; Watching the World Die by Jeven Dovey ’10; and Action Figures by Micah Wolf ’10.
Each submission, no longer than 15 minutes, passed through an initial review by a panel of students who evaluate films according to an established rubric to ensure they meet the festival’s standards of quality. A panel of faculty judges -- Brody Fox, Kjell Hilding, Katie Mills, Paul Reinsch, and James Dutcher of the Art History and Visual Arts Department– then determine the winners.
The festival is sponsored by local businesses that include Spitz, Laemmle Theaters, Swork, Paper, The Oinkster, and Dave’s Chillin’ and Grillin’, as well as Prof. Brody Fox and the Occidental Programming Board.
Occidental has a long tradition of producing Hollywood talent, including Lindsey Collins ’94, co-producer of WALL-E; actor Ben Affleck ’95; Todd Garner ’88, producer of Paul Blart, Mall Cop; screenwriter Kirsten Smith ’92 (Legally Blonde, Ella Enchanted, The House Bunny); Eric Warren ’69, art director for ER and other television shows; Jesus Treviño ’68, movie and TV director (NYPD Blue, Dawson's Creek, ER, Voyager, Deep Space Nine); Terry Gilliam ’62, movie director and Monty Python member; and Marcel Ophuls ’50, Oscar-winning documentarian (Hotel Terminus, The Sorrow and the Pity).
Members of the festival committee are Dovey, Maravilla, Madison Murphy ’10, Cindy Tang ’09, Lindsay Washington ’09, Clayton Hoadley ’09, Spanish exchange student Lucia Puente, and German exchange student Esther Radoy.
