Swimmers, Diver Crowned All-SCIAC
Five members of the Occidental College swimming and diving teams surged to victory at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships held Feb. 16-18 at the Cerritos Swim Center.
Robert Dohring ’08 won the 3-meter diving event, while sophomore sensation Dickson Fai won the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke. Fai also swam the backstroke on the winning 200 medley relay team that featured Jeff Oakley ’07, breaststroke, Matt Harter ’09, butterfly, and Dan Hoffman ’06, freestyle.
Additionally, 13 Occidental athletes were named All-SCIAC for finishing in the top three in their event. In addition to Robert Dohring, Fai, Oakley, Harter, and Hoffman, they are: Sara Ajifu ’08, 400 free relay; Eliza Callwood ’09, 400 free relay; Jon Dohring ’08, 1-meter diving/3-meter diving; Celeste Faber ’09, 1-meter/3-meter diving; Dennis McMillan ’06, 200 free/500 free/400 free relay; Eileen McMillan ’09, 400 free relay; Emily Nathon ’06, 400 free relay; and Andrew Sutton ’06, 400 free relay/400 medley relay.
“To be all-conference is a bigger deal now than it might have been five to 10 years ago,” said Peggy Carl, head swimming and diving coach. “The parity in our conference has gotten much greater. Now the difference between the conference champion and the second, third and even fourth place finishers is a matter of hundredths of seconds. The level of competition is really very good.”
The meet also produced five new team records in the women’s 100 fly (59.77, Callwood); women’s 400 free relay (3:40.64, Callwood, McMillan, Ajifu, Nathon); men’s 200 medley relay (1:36.02, Fai, Oakley, Harter, Hoffman); men’s 1-meter diving (461.90, Jon Dohring); and men’s 3-meter diving (500.75, Robert Dohring).
