Upper Herrick to Reopen in March

February 14, 2005

Herrick Chapel should reopen with new plaster, paint, and a watertight roof early in March -- if weather cooperates, according to Campus Facilities.

Repairs to the chapel, closed on Jan. 7 after several days of heavy rain, are well underway, but more wet weather will delay the entire project by forcing a halt to work on the 41-year-old chapel’s roof.

The closure of the chapel for more than a month is the most lasting legacy of Southern California’s two-week trial by rain earlier this year. Rising groundwater forced the closure of classrooms on the ground floor of Weingart, caused damage in portions of the Emmons Health Center, and shut down the Johnson Hall elevator. Clogged drains flooded the Bookstore on Dec. 28, while heavy rains caused several campus trees to fall.
