The Group Structure of Elliptic Curves and their Applications
An elliptic curve is a specific type of cubic polynomial in two variables. Elliptic curves are a fascinating topic in mathematics, and also have important real-life applications in cryptography that we use every day. This talk will give an elementary introduction to elliptic curves, and give a glance at the rich theory developed by studying their group structure. We will see how elliptic curves can be used to solve the classical number theoretical question of finding rational solutions to Diophantine equations, and we will see how elliptic curves are used in modern cryptography.
