Cesar Chavez Day of Service
Cesar Chavez & Dolores Huerta Day of Service
The Chavez Huerta Day of Service is an event coordinated by the Office of Community Engagement. It is similar to the MLK Day of Service but smaller, attracting approximately 30 students in total. The day of service is in honor of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, two of the most significant leaders in the American farmer’s movement. Chavez was an American farm worker, labor leader, and civil rights activist who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW). The aim of the the Chavez-Huerta Day of Service is to engage Oxy students, staff, and faculty in a community-based project that embodies the spirit of justice. Most recently, Oxy partnered with Young Folks Urban Garden Project at the LA Leadership Academy for Good Food LA. Along with community members, parents, kids, and other groups, Oxy students participated in workshops geared around nutrition and helped the LA Conservation Core clear out the garden.
