OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE CHARGE TO THE SEARCH COMMITTEE FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS AND DEAN OF THE COLLEGE
I appreciate the search committee’s willingness to undertake the important work that will lead to the appointment of the college’s next Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College. The following charge outlines my expectations with respect to the search process and the authority granted to the search committee.
The search committee, including its ex-officio members, shall work with Witt/Kieffer search consultants, Oliver Tomlin and Jennifer Bauer to:
Develop a position profile that will guide the search and selection process and be shared with candidates, the College community and other nomination sources.
Develop a timeline and working plan for outreach and consultation that will lead to an offer during the 2016 fall semester.
Conduct a national search that is designed to attract a highly qualified and diverse pool of candidates.
Make periodic (approximately once a month) reports regarding the progress of the search that will be shared with the College community.
Conduct preliminary off-campus interviews of the most qualified applicants, and identify a minimum of 3 candidates to be invited for on-campus interviews. The committee shall make its selection by consensus.
After the on-campus interviews are completed, gather feedback from the College community on the finalists and provide that to me along with your own evaluation of the finalist candidates. This feedback shall not involve a ranking of the candidates. Furthermore:
The search committee shall observe strict confidentiality (with respect to the identity of the applicants and the substance of any discussions and deliberations about the applicants), throughout the search, and after the search is completed. Any member of the search committee who is found to have breached confidentiality may be removed from the committee without replacement.
The Chief of Administrative Affairs shall provide local project management for the search committee.
Any questions, concerns or disagreements about process or the Committee’s implementation of this charge shall be addressed and resolved by the committee using a fair and reasonable process in the first instance, and in consultation with me thereafter, if appropriate.
