Here are some of my favorite moments from 2013.
Berkus Hall Dedication – September 29, 2013
Occidental's newest, largest and most popular dormitory was formally dedicated as Berkus Hall in recognition of a $5 million gift from David Berkus '62 and Kathleen Berkus and their family to create a new technology endowment. David’s practical knowledge of the nuts and bolts of running a college, his and his family’s generosity, and their willingness to address needs that affect the entire campus in fundamental ways is rare. We are deeply grateful to the Berkus family.
Commencement – May 19, 2013
I had the distinct honor of seeing Occidental’s largest class in college history graduate. This was a memorable class, as these students were the first to arrive at the College when I arrived as president. We were joined by Andrew Delbanco, the Mendelson Family Chair of American Studies and Julian Clarence Levi Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University, who gave a fitting commencement address for our new graduates.
Solar Array Dedication – April 20, 2013
As part of our Founders Day activities, we dedicated Oxy’s $6.8-million, 1-megawatt ground-mounted solar array. I’m pleased to say it’s one of the largest of its kind in Los Angeles and will generate approximately 11 percent of the College’s annual electrical usage. The truly unique nature of this project was the collaboration between physicists, artists and designers to create a curving design based on a mathematical expression known as a hysteresis loop.
Kemp Scholar Lecture – February 11, 2013
Journalist, political commentator, and Kemp biographer Morton Kondracke became the College’s first Kemp Scholar, a program created with the family of Jack Kemp ’57. Mort, who spoke on “Jack Kemp and the Future of the Republican Party,” was the ideal candidate to serve as our first Kemp Scholar. As Jack’s official biographer and as one of the country’s leading conservative commentators, he will set a high standard for future scholars as we work to bring a full range of political opinion to campus.
