Resources for Students
Our department offers a number of learning resources and opportunities for students, beyond basic classroom experiences and standard laboratory research projects.
Intergroup Dialogue Program
The Intergroup Dialogue Program (IDP) is much more than a collection of classroom experiences. Students combine academic coursework with a variety of activities focused on communication, experiential learning, and reflection. Visit the IDP website for additional information.
Practicum: Applied Psychology Experiences
Our practicum courses provide students with direct, hands-on experiences in applying psychological principles to address real-world issues. Practicum students "learn by doing," integrating academic readings with internship-like experiences with partnering organizations. Students often regard these opportunities as some of their most valuable and rewarding educational experiences, due to having made a real difference in others' lives and gained insights about their own capacities and readiness for work in related (mental health / organizational) settings. Not unlike an internship, practicum also represents a form of career exploration & preparation that enhances their ability to enter graduate programs.
- The Clinical Psychology practicum involves assisting mental health professionals in providing services to a variety of clients or patients.
- The Organizational Psychology practicum involves assisting leaders in for-profit businesses or non-profit organizations to address issues related to the management of employees or development of programs / services for clients.
- The Intergroup Dialogue Facilitation practicum teaches students how to implement educational techniques about issues of social identity (e.g., race, gender, sexuality).
Through Occidental's Career Development Center (CDC), students can complete an internship for academic credit in psychology. Typically, students work with the CDC to identify and secure an internship, where project work involves some application of psychology. Internship supervisors work in collaboration with our faculty to set up projects and monitor students' intellectual growth. This option enables students to gain preliminary career experiences in areas of business (e.g., advertising, marketing), with a number of companies and organizations in the LA area.
