Spanish & French Studies
Group Language
Students may pursue a single major that combines the study of two languages, or a language and linguistics.
Possible combinations may include Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and linguistics. Students planning a group major are encouraged to participate in Occidental’s international off-campus study program. Below are the requirements for the offerings in our department. Please consult the Group Language major entry in the Course Catalog for information on other languages and other requirements.
French
The French section of a Group Language major consists of 20 units: French 202, four courses above the 202 level (chosen in consultation with French faculty), and a course (4 units) in linguistics or literary theory.
Spanish
The Spanish section of a Group Language major consists of 20 units: Spanish 202/211; four courses above the 202/211 level (chosen in consultation with Spanish faculty), two of which must be in either literature or linguistics and one of which must be numbered 340 or above; and a course (4 units) in linguistics or literary theory or the senior seminar in Spanish.
Linguistics
The linguistics section of a Group Language major consists of 20 units: Ling 301, a second linguistics course, one semester of a foreign language course (in addition to and in a different category from the language used for the Core language requirement), and two additional courses with a language focus. These courses may include one more foreign language course, a course in Spanish linguistics, Cognitive Science 330, Philosophy 370, Education 205, or a linguistics course via transfer or study abroad (with approval of the linguistics faculty).
