Occidental College
Student Handbook
Smoking
Students are responsible for knowing the following:
In the interest of the health and safety of students, employees, and guests, and in compliance with Section 41.50 of the Los Angeles Municipal Code, it is the policy of Occidental College to provide smoke-free work and living areas for nonsmokers to the maximum extent possible. All members of the campus community are not to smoke in areas where "No Smoking" signs are posted (specifically Branca Patio, Samuelson Pavilion patios, bookstore plaza, library patio, and all residence halls) and in any other places where smoking is a safety hazard or an irritant to others. Smoking of any substance is prohibited both inside and within 30 feet of all College facilities, including academic buildings, offices, and residence halls. Residents with balcony rooms may not smoke on the balconies under any circumstances, including with the balcony door closed. No smoke generating machinery, including hookah and other water pipes, is permitted. Given the detrimental health effects of second-hand smoke, the College requests that smokers recognize and respect the rights of non-smokers to live in a smoke free environment and take efforts to protect their fellow community members from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.
Residents should contact a Residential Education and Housing Services staff member if they are concerned about violations of this policy in their living environment. Other problems or disputes arising from this policy may be brought to the Dean of Students.
