Summer in SoCal? You bet.
While Oxy does not have a formal academic program during the summer, opportunities for current students, incoming students, high school students and younger students abound.
The Undergraduate Research Center seeks to support Oxy’s mission by providing experiences that encourage the development of higher-order thinking skills through faculty-mentored independent research. The 10-week Summer Research Program provides a full-time, faculty-mentored research experience on campus in a community of scholars in disciplines ranging from chemistry to politics to art.
Independent studies courses are designed for self-reliant and motivated students pursuing intellectual inquiry outside of regularly scheduled course offerings. These are supervised by faculty members, generally involving substantial, close student-faculty interactions. Each course is initiated on an individual basis between a student and a faculty member within a student's chosen academic department and program.
Incoming Oxy Freshman
The Multicultural Summer Institute is a four-week academic residential program for about 50 incoming first-year students. It enrolls students from a variety of ethnic, regional and cultural backgrounds who have expressed interest in multicultural issues. MSI gives its diverse student body an introduction to the social, cultural and intellectual resources of Southern California, as well as familiarizing students with the Oxy community and surrounding area.
High School Students
Upward Bound assists students who are first-generation college-bound from low-income backgrounds who intend to enroll in and graduate from post-secondary education programs. The OXY Upward Bound Summer Program is an academically intensive, challenging and richly rewarding experience. Participants live on campus in residence halls and enroll in college-preparatory classes in varying subjects for high school credit. They learn how to create community with students from other high schools and different neighborhoods, ethnicities and languages. A team of Oxy students serving as resident advisors and tutors encourage participants to define for themselves why college is the most important step they can make as young adults.
Elementary & Middle School Students
Athletic Camps provide youth players a training environment in which to learn basketball, baseball, tennis, swimming, soccer, softball, football and/or lacrosse. Participants receive hands-on training with Oxy coaches and student athletes to learn the core fundamentals of a game, maximize their strengths, improve upon weaknesses and foster a positive mental approach to a sport.
