Guthrie Theater celebrates its 50th with the help of Jill Underwood '92:
Jill Underwood has been the Associate Director of Institutional Giving at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, MN since 2008. In a recent email, Jill wrote, "there is a lot of extra activity in the development office" as the Guthrie begins its 50th Anniversary season. "Christopher Hampton is in residence and we’re producing three Hampton plays on three stages, including one world premiere commission called Appomattox."
Jill’s professional experience in nonprofit theater spans more than 20 years. She has worked as an actor, teaching artist, director, and administrator in the Bay Area and New York City. From 2000 to 2008, Jill was an artist/administrator with the Commonweal Theatre, a small professional company in Lanesboro, Minn. During her tenure, she performed in 16 shows and served in an administrative capacity as marketing director and development associate. Since joining the Guthrie, Jill has worked as an actor with the Illusion Theater and Pillsbury House Theatre’s Chicago Avenue Project, which pairs professional actors with neighborhood kids to create original plays. Jill trained at the Royal National Theatre Studio in London after receiving her B.A. from Occidental College.
World Premiere of Under My Skin
Nate Genung '07 will be Production Stage Manager for the world premiere of Under My Skin at the Pasadena Playhouse, opening in September 2012. He will be working with Jill (Johnson) Gold '83. Nate has worked at other Los Angeles theaters, including the Mark Taper Forum, Geffen Playhouse, Ford Amphitheatre, Reprise Theatre Company, UCLA Live, McCoy Rigby and East West Players. Other venues across the country include Paramount Theatre (Boston), The Old Globe (San Diego), Royal George Theatre (Chicago) and Asolo Repertory (Sarasota, FL).
Grayson De Jesus '08, having completed his MFA in acting at UCSD in 2011, is playing the role of Captain Stewart in the North American Touring Company of War Horse, appearing at the Ahmanson June 14 through July 29. After the Los Angeles engagement, the North American tour will visit San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta, Durham, Boston, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, East Lansing, Des Moines, Chicago, Costa Mesa, Tempe, Seattle, Portland, Spokane, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Fayetteville, Charlotte, Providence, Minneapolis, and Appleton.
Hollywood Fringe Festival 2012
Reconstruction by Claudia Restrepo '08 was awarded the Theater Unleashed Award for Best of Fringe. Claudia' play first premiered as part of the 2010 New Play Festival. Other alums who worked on the project included Courtney Dusenberry '09, Kaja Martin '08, Alyssa Escalante '10, Krista Weiss '12, and Tristan Waldron '12.
Miranda Stewart '11 directed two one-act plays by Alyson Terwilliger '11 and Eric Zipper '10 featuring performances by Jonny Rodgers '11 and Alex Marshall '10.
