ASP Conference Travel
Many scholarly organizations offer students the opportunity to present their results at local or regional meetings.
A limited amount of funding is available for students to attend conferences for presentation of results of their academic projects.
Modest conference fees and travel expenses are available upon application to the URC for students who are presenting the results of their research work. The work to be presented must have been completed while the student was an Occidental student (including summer programs at Occidental and other institutions). Grants are limited to the range $50--$300 per project. The ASP grant is not intended to be the sole support for any project. Only limited funding for travel expenses is available. In order to make this opportunity available to more students, long-distance travel (including to the East Coast) is generally not supported by this fund. Each student is limited to one ASP Conference grant per academic year.
The annual Southern California Conference of Undergraduate Research (SCCUR) is an opportunity open to students in all fields. Occidental College will provide the conference fee for all student presenters and faculty mentors. Information about SCCUR, and how to apply for support, is distributed early each fall semester.
This year’s conference will be held on November 17th at CSU, Channel Islands. The URC will provide the conference fee for all student presenters and faculty mentors that register by October 31st. Don’t forget to use purchase order #oxy2012 when registering.
Some conferences, such as the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR), may be partially supported by the College. These opportunities are publicized through the URC website, faculty, bulletin boards, newsletters, and e-mail.
The application for support must be submitted at least four weeks before the conference, and documentation of the student's acceptance as a presenter must be included.
Requests for support to attend and/or participate in workshops, conferences, seminars, etc. will be considered on an individual basis. Students should be aware that these requests have a lower priority and are subject to availability of funding.
To apply, a student should complete the Cover sheet. The application form must be submitted with the following items:
- Project abstract (one page)
- Personal statement (one page)
- Copy of conference announcement
- Copy of student's acceptance to the conference
- Detailed budget of expenses
- Letter of support from project advisor (one page)
The abstract must be the abstract submitted to the Conference. The personal statement should describe the importance of the proposed conference participation to the student's intellectual or professional development.
After your presentation
After the conference, awardees must submit their boarding passes and other receipts and a one to two page summary of the conference, its value to the student, and any other experiences which seem noteworthy. These reports should be submitted no later than one month after the completion date by e-mail to urc@oxy.edu and should be copied to the mentor.
