The residential staff represent post-secondary institutions from community college, to CSU and UC, and even liberal arts colleges.
New Experiences
The OXY UB Summer Program is an academically intensive, challenging and richly rewarding experience for participants. Students learn how to succeed with the right tools. In addition, participants learn how to create community with students from other high schools, different neighborhoods, ethnicities and languages. They also learn how to work cooperatively and respectfully with college student staff who come from all walks of life. The OXY UB Project encourage its’ students to: Define for yourself why college is the most important step you can make as a young adult.
Summer Program
During the summer students live in campus residence halls and are immersed in a concentrated, challenging and supportive learning environment. They enroll in college preparatory classes for high school credit in Mathematics, Literature, Social Studies, English Langauge Arts, Science and Foreign Language. Supervised silent study, study labs, field trips and recreational activities are integral parts of the Project. A team of adult college students (resident advisors and tutors) provides twenty-four hour supervision in the residence halls and are available for individual tutoring and advisement.
Live on Campus
The OXY UB Project is unqiue in that it REQUIRES participants to live in residence the entire five weeks and on the weekends. Students live in a college residence hall supervised by the Associate Director, Academic Coordinator and fourteen college staff. Each student has one roommate. Male students/staff live on the second floor and female students/staff live on the third floor. Three balanced meals per day plus snacks are provided.
High School Credit
A participant can earn 5 credits per course, a total of 10-15 credits. These units are accepted as transferrable credit by the four Target High Schools in LAUSD. A student can move ahead in mathematics or catch up, earn units in elective courses that meet the A – G curriculum requirements for college elligiblity to UC and or CSU systems. Choices include Geometry through Pre-Calculus, English Literature, Science, Social Studies and Foreign Languages.
Tutoring
Individual tutoring in Math, English and Elective Courses provided after class at the residence hall. Tutors encourage and facilitate study groups and peer tutoring. Study labs and review sessions are regular components of the tutorial sessions.
No Cost
There is NO cost to participate in the OXY UB Project.
Upward Bound at Occidental College is a Title IV TRiO Program. Funds for the current cycle 2013-2018 are provided through the U.S. Department of Education, $547,508 (95% of project cost); Summer Food Services Program/ California Department of Education/USDA, $13,000 (2% of project cost); and a $20,000 (3% of project cost) matching grant from Occidental College.
