Congratulations to Linda Godinez for participating in the Annual ASCE Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition.

The first blog of the Spring semester is dedicated to Ms. Linda Godinez, from Belmont High School. Linda has been at OXY UB for two years now, and is about to enter her Senior year. This young lady always has something going on, whether it's summer program or academic year.  We encourage all of our students to stay active, participate in academic programs in school and do community service. The annual popsicle stick competition was held at Cal State Northride on February 15, 2014. The competition, in it's 20th year, brought over 250 high school students to compete. Congratulations to Linda and her team.

UB Seniors Are Making it Happen

Senior, Pedro Chavez from Belmont High School joined the OXY Upward Bound program two years ago. Currently all seniors in the UB program are taking care of college applications, their coursework in school, extra activities, and finishing up their last year in Upward Bound. Students like Pedro make sure to support Upward Bound, by attending recruitment and speaking on behalf of the program. Every senior in the program, should be taking full advantage of workshops, Financial Aid night, support from the UB office, and asking for help if you need it. Good luck to all of our seniors during the college application season.

OXY UB Sophomores from Franklin High School in Highland Park.

UB participants stopped by during recruitment to say hello and catch up.  A whole new group of students will be coming to campus soon.  And in a few weeks, Chente, Diana, and Ezequiel will no longer be "newbies."  All students will meet the new admits on an upcoming campus tour.  Thank you to all UB participants that came out and showed their UB spirit during recruitment.

UB Juniors make their annual trip to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

Academic Coordinator Violeta Mendoza and College Adviser Aide Marvin Brown take a group of students from Franklin and WIlson HS for community service.  Every trip that students take, they watch a video about the current situation of hunger in Los Angeles and they get oriented with their volunteer area.  OXY UB partners with L.A. Works to get students signed up and confirm a day.  The Upward Bound program strongly encourages all students to do community service.

SY 2013 is in the books.

The UB family, and the families of UB family, came together on the last day of Summer 2013 to close out a great summer. The summer started with some challenges, ended in a familiar place, and now everyone can take a breather. UB traditions continued this summer with Spirit Week, and new UB moments were made like Ms. Parra's Journalism class "UB Times." OMG, this blogger can't put it down! As usual the summer bids farewell to the Senior Class. And as they ready for their Senior Year, we here in the UB office are looking foward to another Academic Year.

Crunch Time as Upward Bound enters Week 5.

Upward Bound had a great time for the final weekend.  We had fun-day Friday, and on Saturday we headed east to The Claremont Colleges and Cal Poly Pomona.  The weekend concluded with Mega Silent Study, and some much needed down time.  But as students begin to look towards finals, we begin to look back at the best moments of 2013.  There are four more days left until we close this summer with an amazing awards ceremony on Stewie Beach.  There are a few more surprises coming around the corner, so don't lose focus.  Good luck to everyone on their last week of the program! TRiO works!!!

Beyond their H.S., Students discover their "UB spirit."

After the first UB dance last night, students are approaching the end of Week 3.  Students just completed midterms, and everyone is breathing a sigh of relief.  Everyone this week worked together and created study groups to get prepared.  UB participants are encouraging each other in their academic, dorm life, and RA groups.  Students are keeping their roommates on-task, helping in each other wake up in the morning, and even peer-tutor other students.  The UB spirit is about helping out, and is guided by the UB Principles.  Keep that UB spirit alive, the weekend is almost here!

Week 2 makes students think "time management."

By Week 2, all program participants know the Upward Bound schedule from wake-up to bedtime.  Students become fully immersed in their classes, RA groups, dorm life, workshops, and the delicious food.  Even parents begin to frequently call the UB office to ask about their son/daughters well-being.  The vibe in the residence hall begins to display itself on a nightly basis.  And by this time, students have made new friends.  Students are scoring 9's on their SPC's already, and they're gearing up for midterms.  UB participants will start burning the midnight oil, real soon.
