Majors & Departments

An Occidental education is academically demanding, intellectually provocative, and tailored to your interests. As a liberal arts college, we seek to produce well-rounded graduates rather than provide narrow pre-professional training. An education here also takes full advantage of the College’s location in Los Angeles.

Our unique combination of interdisciplinary study, community-based learning, overseas studies, and one of the country’s best undergraduate research programs allows you to:

  • choose from 31 majors offered by 40 departments and programs.
  • participate in exchange programs with colleges here and abroad.
  • take classes at the Art Center College of Design and Caltech.
  • earn joint degrees from Caltech or Columbia University.

You may declare a major during the first year, and must do so by the end of the sophomore year. You can also declare a double major, an academic minor, or pursue an independent pattern of study.

We make sure you have the resources and support you need to succeed—whether it’s the Hameetman Science Center, our wireless network, or the support services provided by the Center for Academic Excellence.
