International Programs

Just under half of all Oxy students study abroad for a semester on programs in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Oceania. Students from all majors study abroad and we emphasize cross-cultural engagement through home stays, community-based learning projects, volunteering and academic internships as part of the academic program.

During the fall semester, selected seniors may study off-campus in New York City with the U.N. Program. During the semester students study the contemporary role of the United Nations and complete an academic internship at a mission to the U.N. or related non-governmental agency.

We maintain a distinctive research abroad program in which selected students are fully funded to pursue independent research or creative work virtually anywhere in the world for up to 12 weeks during the summer. Beginning during the fall of junior year, research abroad applicants work closely with an academic supervisor to develop a compelling proposal for summer after junior year.

International exchange students are a vital part of the diverse community that is Occidental. We have exchange partnerships with several universities around the world.

Programs that focus on global issues and the cross-cultural experience are an essential part of Oxy. You can participate in the Topics in Culture Dialog Series which includes such panels as: Race and the Study Abroad Experience; Gender and Sexuality Abroad; Women Abroad; What Is Cultural Immersion Anyway?; Global Nomads: When More Than One Country Is Home; Creativity and the Arts Abroad.

Many Oxy students attend graduate school abroad or work abroad after graduation and stay in touch through the Alumni Abroad Program which connects overseas alums with undergraduates studying and researching abroad.
