Community Literacy Center

The Occidental Community Literacy Center has been a Los Angeles resource since 1963.  Skilled Occidental students provide one-on-one reading and writing instruction for children in kindergarten through sixth grade twice a week.

Building on elementary students’ strengths and interests, Occidental tutors design language arts instruction and enrichment for all levels of students. During tutoring sessions, children will participate in story telling, creative writing, readers theater, structured language arts activities, as well as phonic and phonemic awareness activities.

The Literacy Center is open from 3:30-5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays during Occidental’s Fall and Spring semesters. To begin the application process or for more information, call Désirée Zamorano at (323) 259-2948. If at the time of your application there is no longer space available, you will be notified and placed on a waiting list for the following session. Cost is $250 per semester.
