FAQs

How many hours a week can I work if I have an on-campus job?

During the fall and spring semesters, you are allowed to work a total of 15 hours per week for all on-campus positions. This is a policy set by the faculty and is taken quite seriously. If, however, you have unique circumstances you may appeal this policy by submitting a written request outlining your reasons to the Dean of Students and the Director of Financial Aid.

During fall orientation and fall, winter and spring breaks, you are allowed to work a maximum of 40 hours per week. Earnings will be part of your Federal Work Study or Occidental Work Award amount for the academic year.

What do I do if I earn more than my work award?

You will be notified when you are close to exhausting your work award.  If you wish to continue working beyond your work allocation, you may request an increase in your work award in the Office of Financial Aid.  All requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility as well as availability of funds.

Can I work at Oxy during the summer?

You may work at Occidental during the summer.  Please keep in mind the summer payroll period is May 21, 2009 through August 24, 2009. If you continue to work after the August 24 cut-off date your earnings will be rolled over to your Federal Work Study Award for fall semester.

What kind of work schedule can I expect?

Your supervisor will coordinate your work schedule with you each semester. It will vary based on your academic schedule. You may not miss class in order to work.

How much do I get paid for an on-campus job?

On-campus jobs are paid based on established College pay ranges, depending on the job classification, experience, and job performance. Human Resources is responsible for approving job classifications and pay ranges.

What documents will I need to prove my eligibility to work in the United States?

To begin employment at Occidental College you must first establish your right to work in the United States.  Here are the most common documents that you will need (a complete list is available in Human Resources).
