Geology majors explore the natural world through classroom, lab, and field experiences. Investigation of geological problems begins early in their education and culminates in the Senior year when geology majors complete a thesis project. These projects typically involve close collaboration with a faculty member at Occidental or an internship at other universities. Geology is a global science, so students who have made sufficient progress in the major are encouraged to study abroad for a semester. All students are urged to consider gaining international experience by attending field camp abroad after their Junior year.
Geology majors commonly spend the summer working on research projects with faculty. Projects may involve lab work in our state-of-the art Hameetman Science Center, or students and faculty may travel to field sites in the western U.S. and Canada.
