Hungary: Budapest-Mathematics

Eligibility: A 3.0 GPA.  Completion of Math 310 or Math 320 prior to the start of the program.

Dates:  Fall:  Early September–Mid-December; Spring:  Early February – Late May

Location: Budapest, with a population of just over two million inhabitants.

Program Structure: The Budapest Semester in Mathematics is an island program run by St. Olaf College. It is a program of advanced mathematics.

Academic Program:
Intensive Hungarian Language
Hungarian Language Course ~ 4 credits
Elective Math Course ~ 4 credits
Elective Math Course ~ 4 credits
Elective Math Course ~ 4 credits

The program begins with a two-week intensive Hungarian language course prior to the start of the semester which is required by Oxy. Then, students take four courses to earn 16 Oxy units.  Courses are taught in English, for program participants only, by Hungarian faculty at the Technical University Budapest. Considerable time is devoted to problem solving and encouraging student creativity. Emphasis is on depth of understanding rather than on the quantity of material. All students are required to take the Hungarian language course for the duration of the semester.

Students should work carefully with the academic staff on-site to construct an academic program totaling no fewer than sixteen credits.  A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will be awarded for the semester.

Housing: Homestay or apartment with other program participants.
Number of Students: Approximately 60 students.
