United States: New York-Oxy at the United Nations

Eligibility:  A 3.0 GPA; DWA 201 and Econ 101, plus a minimum of one additional course on international politics as well as a demonstrated commitment to the study of international issues. Open to qualified  students in all majors. Junior applicants preferred; exceptional sophomores may apply.  Note that while off-campus study at Occidental College is limited to a single semester, in general, participation on the UN program poses an exception to this policy and approximately one-third of the participants on the UN program study abroad prior to their senior year.

Dates: Fall only: Late August – Mid-December

Location: New York City (Manhattan); population 8.15 million.

Program Structure: Students take two academic classes, work thirty-four hours a week at selected internships at the Secretariat, non- governmental organization or other related organizations, and research an independent study project related to the internship. Internships are not available in Legal Affairs, UNDP or UNICEF.

Academic Program:
The United Nations, Peace and Security ~ 4 credits
The United Nations and Human Development ~ 4 credits
Academic Internship Seminar ~ 8 credits
Total Oxy Credits: 16

Students must submit a copy of their Independent Research Project to the IPO no later than four weeks following the completion of the semester abroad.  Transcripts will not be processed until the ISP is received.

Housing: Housing in student residence halls in or near Manhattan. Oxy provides a meal and local transportation allowance.

Number of Students: Approximately 16 Occidental students.
