Human Subjects

The Human Subjects Research Review Committee

The Human Subjects Research Review Committee reviews all research involving human subjects conducted at Occidental College or by members of the Occidental College community, including faculty, students and staff. It serves as Occidental's Institutional Review Board for purposes of compliance with the Code of Federal Regulations: Title 45, Part 46 - Protection of Human Subjects and the Occidental College Policy on Research involving Human Subjects. Research may not begin until you have been formally notified that your proposal has been approved by the committee.

For more information about the committee, about the regulation and ethics of research involving human subjects, or about submitting a proposal for the committee to review, please review the following information.

To Submit a Proposal for Review

If you are a member of the Occidental community planning any sort of research concerning human subjects, you should contact the IRB Coordinator or the Chair of the Human Subjects Research Review Committee to determine whether your research needs to be reviewed by the committee. You should also review the link to Title 45 of the CFR Part 46.101 section B (see below), which identifies the research that is exempt from this policy. You should complete the Proposal Approval Form (from the link below) and submit it with signatures to the IRB Coordinator in Johnson Hall Room 112 to be forwarded to the committee. In addition, you must email the same document to hsrrc@oxy.edu. The proposal will be reviewed by the IRB Coordinator for completeness, and then, depending on the nature of the research requiring review, it will either be reviewed by the full committee or receive an expedited review. Please note, the Committee meets monthly and does not generally meet during the months of July and August; researchers should make appropriate plans.
