Email to Campus: Commitment to Our Community – Post-Election Resources

As promised, we have prepared an extensive list of resources applicable to immigration and other potential areas of discrimination to help direct those in need to available experts and other sources of information. (Thanks to Caro Brighouse for coordinating the collection of information and all those who worked so hard to compile this list.) Please let me know if you have questions or suggestions about additional resources. We will continue to update the list. If we don’t have immediate answers to your questions, we will work with you to find them.

The term "sanctuary campus" is powerful because of its symbolism, but it is also imprecise, because it means different things to different people. As a community -- including our board of trustees -- we will work over the coming weeks to define "sanctuary campus" at Oxy, recognizing that our definition will likely evolve as the new administration develops and refines its policies. Our work will be guided by the following principles:

  • Immigration status: Occidental will not voluntarily assist any federal, state or local agency in connection with their enforcement of federal immigration law. Campus Safety will not question or detain an Oxy community member on the basis of that person’s immigration status.
  • Privacy: Occidental will continue to vigorously protect the privacy of all members of the Oxy community, in accordance with all applicable federal and state laws including the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the California constitution. Absent a lawful subpoena or other judicial process, Occidental will not honor any requests for the education records of students or confidential personnel records without the individual’s written consent.
  • Harassment, discrimination and retaliation: The College will continue to enforce its policies prohibiting harassment, discrimination and retaliation, taking appropriate action against violators and providing support to those who have been targeted.

I am proud to be part of the passionate community on this campus. I look forward to working together and being a source of support.
