What happens when the power of machines exceeds those of nature? When robots do everything — from building weapons, to teach Ashtanga, to simulate a perfect sunrise while playing a soft acoustic cover of your favorite Bowie song —  what happens then? First daughter Helen Spectacular travels to Robo Island (Silicon Valley meets the Bermuda Triangle) on a secret mission to free thousands of robots from servitude. But what’s clear to her as being ethically right seems ridiculous to everyone else. At what point does a being resemble a human enough to deserve human rights? When artificial intelligence is more efficient than human intelligence, then what is the value of humanity? Should we all just Netflix and chill, eating sugar cereals and taking naps while robots do everything for us? Absurdly comic and existentially chilling, U-R-U examines the societal obsession with progress at all costs and the decreasing worth of humanity in this increasingly artificial world. After all, what defines being human, and how do we hang onto our humanity in a new world order?

Join us for a free panel discussion on U-R-U Friday November 30 at 5pm. A reception, open to the public, for "U-R-U: Aren’t You", the Ettinger Projected Poetry and Art Project, will follow. Inspired by themes from the play, "U-R-U: Aren't You" is a video installation projected onto the facade of Occidental's Johnson and Fowler buildings.
