With Professor Jim Canary
This talk will combine imagery and video clips of methods of book production in Tibet to introduce the viewer to the materials used and artisans involved in creating these spiritual treasures.
Jim Canary is the Head of Conservation Department at the Lilly Library and has been with the Indiana University Libraries since 1984. He is also adjunct faculty in the Henry Hope School of Fine Arts teaching a course in Book Structures, a hands-on course which utilizes the resources of the Lilly Library. His specialty is the art of the book in Tibet and he has travelled extensively in the Himalayas for nearly 40 years researching and documenting the traditional artisans engaged in manuscript and print production. Since 2001 He has been the caretaker and curator of the original scroll of Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road for Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay travelling with it and overseeing its’ exhibition internationally.
