In support of the new Music Production track in the Music major, the Music Department is hosting industry professionals in a series of guest lectures, each followed by a Q&A and reception.

In January 2008—while working toward a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Occidental—Ramona Gonzalez began recording the songs for what would become her debut LP as Nite Jewel (titled Good Evening). What initially began as ambient synth pieces morphed into fully-fledged lo-fi pop, in which she layered analog synths and drum machines on a portable eight-track cassette recorder before adding her ethereal vocals.

Soon after starting her MySpace music page, Gonzalez caught the ears of notable critics and tastemakers, and by 2009, she was touring European festivals and releasing music to wide critical acclaim. In 2012, Gonzalez signed to Secretly Canadian and released her second album One Second of Love. Gonzalez has since released two more albums, Liquid Cool and Real High, on her own record label, Gloriette, to widespread accolades.

This lecture is made possible by the generous support of the Mellon Foundation.
This is a CSP99 event.
