Indigenous writers and artists documented the destruction of sacred sites and objects that accompanied the Spanish invasion and evangelization of Mexico. This lecture examines the meanings that Nahuas (Aztecs) ascribed to ritual objects and sacred sites that were the targets of iconoclasm and shows how they linked the destruction of material culture with violence against indigenous bodies. By writing their histories and recording their collective memories, Nahua intellectuals and artists contested the triumphalist narratives of conquest and colonization of Spanish authors.
