The Sophomore Experience

Oswald at Orientation

We are dedicated to supporting your journey as a rising sophomore at Occidental.

Your transition to an in-person Oxy experience is exciting for all of us and we're eager to help you navigate! More information on housing, meal plans and other important items will be coming soon—including a roommate matching form in early June.

As the Fall 2021 semester begins, our sophomore sessions are designed to create a dynamic, celebratory, and welcoming environment—a space where you can explore how to tap into resources and services offered by the College. By building a sense of community that connects students to faculty, staff, administrators, and each other, the Sophomore Experience also fosters an appreciation of Oxy’s commitment to equity, excellence, and service.

The program will run from Sophomore Move-In Day (Thursday, August 26th) through the first week of September (Welcome Week). While more details are yet to come, we're offering a glimpse into our summer and fall plans below. For more information, email Marcus A. Rodriguez, Assistant Dean of Students and SLICE Director, at

On-campus housing will be provided to all rising sophomore students. Due to the virtual nature of the 2020-21 year, Residential Education and Housing Services is aware that some sophomore students may not have connected with other students. Therefore, roommate matching will be offered to all sophomores. Additional details about housing, including roommate matching and assignments, will be shared with students in early June.

L.A. Engage

Ongoing through September

L.A. Engage was a virtual experience for Fall 2020 students. Although online, L.A. Engage still allowed exploration of the dynamic arts, culture, history and community of some of Los Angeles’ neighborhoods, from the trendy to the historic. The Fall 2021 L.A. Engage program will be post-orientation online/self-guided experience for all students. Stay tuned! To learn more about the arts, culture, community, and history of the neighborhoods we've selected, contact SLICE Assistant Director Shaneice Warfield at
