Job Shadowing
Dr. Kim Shriner '80 leads current Sophomores; Pari Vanjara, Cecilia Miranda, and Amber Thai; down the halls of Huntington Memorial Hospital during their WIMS Away job shadowing experience
Students who have participated in Walk In My Shoes have found it to be invaluable in determining which industry and profession is right for them. In some cases, WIMS has even lead to internships and job interviews.
WIMS
Walk In My Shoes (WIMS) places students in one day, 1:1 to 3:1 job shadowing experiences with alumni and community members. The program is tailored to students' unique interests and has successfully matched over 500 seniors, juniors and sophomores in as wide ranging occupations as Marine Biology to Green Business to Art for over a decade.
What is the process?
A career professional (host) works with a student applicant by arranging the visit. As an educational program, students prepare reflective essays and resumes, determine learning goals, and partake in pre-site training that allows them to successfully complete their shadow experience.
Hosts will be invited to review the students' resumes and essays, assign homework to help students prepare for the day, create an agenda that exposes students to the complexities of their job, and attend a celebratory post-site luncheon.
The program runs in the Fall semester, and students have approximately three weeks to complete their visits.
WIMS Away
WIMS Away is a program for sophomores, placing students in two-three day, 1:1 to 3:1 job shadowing experiences with alumni and community members in one of 6 cities around the country: Los Angeles, New York, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle or Washington D.C. The program is tailored to help sophomores explore career options so they can begin to target their interests for summer internships and beyond.
What is the process?
Sophomores may apply to one or two pre-determined sites of interest, ideally with a host in their hometown (this is not a funded program so priority is given to students in the town where they live, students applying to a site outside of their hometown would be responsible to cover all travel and housing expenses). As an educational program, students prepare reflective essays and resumes, determine learning goals, and partake in pre-site training that allows them to successfully complete their shadow experience. Upon completion of their job shadow students must submit responses to journal questions and participate in a celebratory post-site event with their fellow participants.
Hosts will be invited to review the students' resumes and essays, assign homework to help students prepare for the day, and to create an agenda that exposes students to the complexities of their job.
Students apply during the Fall semester and the program runs over the last two weeks of the winter break, between the Fall and Spring semesters.
