Allison de Fren is a media maker and scholar whose research-practice falls at the intersection of sexuality/gender, film/media, and science/technology, often tracing a line from contemporary representations to earlier conceptual histories and audiovisual practices.

Her documentaries and audiovisual essays have screened internationally at film festivals, galleries, museums, and universities, and her writing has appeared in printed and on-line journals and anthologies. She is a winner of the Science Fiction Research Association's 2010 Pioneer Award and a winner of the Society for Literature, Science, and Art’s 2009 Schachterle Essay Prize.

Prof. de Fren has presented, taught, and mentored on new forms of media research and activism, including remix/culture jamming and videographic criticism, and she enjoys helping students think through non-traditional and multi-disciplinary forms for their work. She has served as visiting faculty in the Interactive Media Arts Program at NYU Shanghai and a Mellon postdoctoral fellow at the Ammerman Center for Arts & Technology at Connecticut College.
