Financial Aid
Oxy Grants and Scholarships
Occidental offers two types of scholarship assistance to help fund your education: merit and need-based.
Merit Scholarships
Each year the Office of Admission awards a limited number of merit scholarships to highly competitive applicants. Merit scholarships* are based on academic ability, achievement, motivation, and promise.
Students who complete their admission application are reviewed for merit scholarships; there is no separate application process.
Merit scholarships are
- awarded for up to four years provided you maintain the academic requirements required of the scholarship
- only considered at the time of admission and are not awarded or re-assessed at any subsequent point
- pro-rated for less than full-time (12 units) study
- pro-rated if you do not attend the College for the entire academic year
- pro-rated for transfer students based on the units accepted for transfer at the time of admission
- not available to students enrolled in less than 6 units
Need-Based Scholarships & Opportunity Grants
Each year the Financial Aid Office reviews your eligibility for need-based scholarships based on our review of your yearly financial aid application.
To be considered for need-based scholarships you must complete your financial aid application by our established deadlines. First-year students and new transfer students must complete separate application requirements than returning students.
Need-based scholarships are
- awarded if you demonstrate financial need
- re-determined every year based on your yearly financial aid application
- not guaranteed year-to-year
- pro-rated for less than full-time (12 units) study
- pro-rated if you do not attend the College for the entire academic year
- not awarded to students enrolled less than 6 units
Need-based scholarships are provided through the generosity of individual donors, private corporations and agencies, alumni gifts, and other resources from the College. If your need-based scholarship is funded by a specific scholarship donor, you may be asked to thank the person or organization that provided your support by writing a ‘Thank You’ letter.
