Food Justice Month 2014: Real Food, Just Food
Just announced 2014 FJM Keynote Speaker: author and activist Dr. Janet Poppendieck
Food Justice Month is a collaboration between many departments and clubs on campus to highlight the plight and rights of workers throughout the Food Chain. Come get involved with food in your community, and make sure not to miss Good Food Day LA on the 24th, when there will be tables on the JSC quad from Veg Club, Campus Dining, and more!
2014 Food Justice Month Keynote Speaker:
Who: Food author and activist Dr. Janet Poppendieck
What: The Advocate's Dilemna
Anti-hunger advocacy has been, on the whole, very effective. If you compare US food assistance with cash assistance, the contrast is impressive. But even at their best, federal food assistance programs will not end poverty, nor secure a living wage for American workers. And while they can be tweaked to shift procurement toward sustainable sources, on the whole, they still bolster the traditional agribusiness. Should advocates re-direct their efforts to broader social and environmental justice, or should they stick with the practices and arguments that have helped federal food assistance reach one in four Americans, and transfer more than $100 billion in purchasing power to low income Americans?"

When: October 23rd, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm
Why: Dr. Poppendieck has been on the front lines of the Good Food Revolution for a long time. She has written award-winning books on school food, food assistance and hunger, and assists several national and local organizations on food policy. With this year's theme of "Real Food, Just Food," we couldn't have picked a more representative leader.
Also: The Occidental Bookstore will have Dr. Poppendieck's three books available for purchase - a signed copy of these pivotal volumes makes a great gift to any foodie, and an even better addition to your bookshelf.
This month long celebration of, and effort towards, Food Justice will feature food-related speakers and workshops, off-campus trips to farms, special sustainability theme meals in the Marketplace, a Food Justice quad fair on Good Food Day (Oct. 24), and Oxy's very own Iron Chef competition.
