Interdisciplinary Writing

The Interdisciplinary Writing minor is a program that enables you to engage in a range of writing situations for diverse audiences.

The minor encourages a comparative approach to writing across genres: expository prose, creative writing (fiction and nonfiction), playwriting, journalism, screenwriting and multimedia, and professional writing. A primary benefit of the minor is that you will have opportunities to learn from faculty in different disciplines, as you gain knowledge of the scholarship and practices in that discipline while writing in the genre of that academic field.

The interdisciplinary approach of this minor helps students develop strong and effective writing skills, techniques, and practices through varied pedagogical styles and methods. The IW minor is designed to complement your work in your major of choice. Students in the minor are majors in a wide range of disciplines, including critical theory and social justice, cognitive science, sociology, English, and computer science.

The IW minor provides a strong writing foundation for students interested in any number of academic disciplines and career fields. Oxy is unique among our comparison small liberal arts colleges in offering a writing minor that is genuinely interdisciplinary and designed to support student writers across all majors.
