Occidental College
Undergraduate Research Center
Jet Propulsion Laboratory Internship
In partnership with the Career Development Center, the Undergraduate Research Center coordinates a relationship with the JPL-SIRI program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA.
This program will allowed talented sophomores, juniors and seniors to work on scientific research projects with JPL science mentors on-site at JPL.
This is an outstanding opportunity for professional experience and, while unpaid, the SIRI program offers student interns a gateway for JPL's prestigious, paid summer programs and continued research.
The JPL-SIRI program, an internship program during the academic year, "gives students real-life work experiences as a component of their academic program, ones that can help them make career choices and, if they decide to go into some kind of technical work, help them chart future steps in their education." You can learn more about this program at http://siri.jpl.nasa.gov/. The deadline for Fall 2012 has passed, but Announcements of Opportunity (AO) are posted. Expect the spring announcements to be similar to fall announcements, with some new or changed projects.
If you are interested in being considered for one of these internships, you should submit the cover sheet, a resume, grade report, and the name of a faculty member who agrees to recommend you to Liselda J. Fabian in the CDC office by 5 pm by Tuesday, October 5, 2012. The URC will send the faculty a recommendation form to complete. If you are selected by Oxy for the program, you will need to confirm the two opportunities that interest you from the updated list available on Nov. 7, meet with the Career Development Center staff to polish your resume, and submit your application to JPL in the URC office. If selected by JPL, you will register for a two unit internship course for spring and participate in the internship program through the CDC.
If you have questions about this new program, please contact Liselda J. Fabian or speak with your advisor or other faculty in your major.
