Occidental College
Financial Aid
Leave of Absence
Know what happens if you decide to take a leave from the College.
If you decide to take a leave of absence or withdraw from the College, the Financial Aid Office will be notified by the Registrar’s Office. Your financial aid file will be placed in an inactive status until your return.
Re-Applying for Aid
Remember to re-apply for financial aid by March 2nd of the academic year in which you wish to return. For example, submit application requirements by March 2, 2013 if you plan to return anytime in the academic year 2013-2014.
Repaying your Loans
If you have received any type of student loan while enrolled, Occidental is required to notify the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) that you are no longer enrolled at the College. This will trigger your lenders to place your loan into a repayment status. Even if you plan to return to Occidental within a semester or two of your leave, you are still responsible for making payments on your loan while you are not enrolled.
Exit Counseling
Federal law also requires you to complete an exit counseling. For Federal Perkins Loans, Occidental Low Interest Loans or Occidental No Interest Loans, this counseling is offered by Occidental's Student Loan Office.
For a Subsidized or Unsubsidized Federal Direct/Stafford Loan, you need to complete your exit counseling via the National Student Loan Data System.
If you have more than one loan, you will need to complete exit counseling for each loan program.
