Music on a Friday Afternoon (or "MOFA") is an informal recital series where students showcase the music they've been practicing throughout the semester. Maya Angulo, Kailey Bae, James Henderson, Raiah Rofsky, Veronica Wang, Sherwin Zhang, and Ryan Yuzhe Zhu will perform as soloists, with piano accompaniment by Alan Geier and Shawn Costantino.

This week, soloists include Jon Donaldson '21, Anna Gray '22, Inez Leon '21, Louis Nguyen '22, Sandy Nguyen '21, Adelia Nunn '21, Naya Ramtahal '22, Eliana Sternin '19, and Jiaqian Wu '20.

Program

The Oxy Chamber Music program, coached by Gloria Lum and Stephanie O'Keefe, is made up of two divisions: Chamber Ensembles and Oxy New Music.

In addition to practicing secular rumba drumming, students of this course study the sacred rhythms of Santeria and learn to sing the songs of the Orishas in the Yoruba dialect of Lucumi. Come hear the culmination of their work at this public performance!

Directed by Shawn Costantino, the Jazz Ensemble meets weekly to rehearse, learn basic jazz theory, and practice improvisational skills. Jazz enables people of diverse cultures, nationalities, and backgrounds to come together and communicate through the common language of music. Regularly playing to a full house, the ensemble brings the best of jazz to Bird Studio once every semester, with past performances including music by Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Henry Mancini, Stevie Wonder, and many others.

Students of Junko Ueno Garrett will perform works by Chopin, Mozart, Gershwin, Beethoven, Durand, and Piazzolla. Featuring Kevin Grundy, Linjing He, Haobin Huang, Calvin Lesko, Will Saffran, Alex Twomey, Jiaqian Wu, and Iris Zhang.
