To the Occidental Community:

To follow up on the campus message we sent below regarding an Oxy student with a suspected COVID-19 diagnosis, we are pleased to be able to inform you that test results received this morning were negative, meaning the student does not have the virus.

The student, whose symptoms are receding, will remain in isolation for another three days, as would be the case with any student who has been ill. The two students with whom the patient had contact have been released from quarantine, effective today.

We are, of course, relieved that our student is recovering and is not infected with the virus. However, this is no time to relax our vigilance or social distancing practices, as the number of coronavirus cases in Los Angeles continues to climb upward. Community members should continue to practice standard preventive measures such as regularly washing your hands, maintaining at least six feet between yourself and others, and staying home if you are ill. We further encourage the community to not congregate in groups unless absolutely essential to the nature of your job or your academics. In these cases, try to limit gatherings to no more than 2-3 people and maintain six feet of distance.

We will continue to respond to any suspected cases of coronavirus with an abundance of caution, following our quarantine and isolation protocols and keeping the campus fully informed.

To the Occidental Community:

We write to inform you that we appear to have our first student case of coronavirus on campus. The student was tested for COVID-19 today and we are awaiting the results, which can take up to four days. Given the initial diagnosis by medical personnel at a hospital last night and out of an abundance of caution, we are isolating the student who is unwell and quarantining those who were in close contact with them.

If the diagnosis is positive, this would be the first COVID-19 case at Occidental. This is an outcome that we anticipated would eventually occur on campus, and as such are prepared and will follow the College’s quarantine protocol.

The student went into isolation immediately after their fever was detected, and will remain in mandatory isolation, per our protocol, for 10 days after the fever has abated. The student is living by themselves in a residence hall room with its own bathroom, and is receiving care. I know you join me in wishing our student a speedy recovery.

Contact tracing for the infected individual has identified only two students with whom they have had close contact. The two students are roommates. Both have been quarantined together in their residence hall room with its own bathroom; neither currently are showing any symptoms. The quarantine will remain in place for the 14-day incubation period. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has been notified.

While a case of COVID-19 on campus can be the cause of concern, it may be beneficial to provide you with some helpful context. By following our quarantine protocol, the College is taking appropriate measures to protect the community from further exposure. Moreover, the students in isolation and quarantine pose no risk to the community through the doors to their rooms or ventilation system. Becoming infected by someone with the virus requires actual contact or being very close to an infected individual. Remaining more than six feet away (as good social distancing suggests) makes it virtually impossible to contract the virus from someone else. Community members should continue to practice standard preventive measures such as regularly washing your hands, practicing social distancing, and staying home if you are ill.

Students on campus who develop flu-like symptoms should contact Emmons Wellness Center at (323) 259-2657 or Oxy’s 24/7 Confidential Hotline at (323) 341-4141; faculty and staff should call their health care providers. Please always call ahead before arriving.

We also would like to take this opportunity to address those students remaining on campus. We appreciate the very real reasons you petitioned to stay on campus. As the number of cases diagnosed in Los Angeles County continues to increase, the fewer people we have living on campus during this period, the safer it is for the collective community, particularly essential staff who continue to work on campus. We encourage students who now have the option, or might in the future have the ability to go home, to please do so.

We are committed to being transparent on this important public health issue. Should there be other confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Oxy community, we will keep you informed.

Stay well,
President Jonathan Veitch

Presidente Jonathan Veitch
