Event Date: Nov. 1, 2022

Join J-town Action と Solidarity (JAとS) for a workshop on the principles and practice of mutual aid. During the workshop, JAとS members offer advice on what it takes to run a mutual aid POWER UP! table, discuss how mutual aid can address the root causes of existing systems of oppression, and explain why building community is crucial in the fight against powerful institutions that are currently working to criminalize and banish the poor. There will be opportunities to connect with the work of J-town Action と Solidarity, and learn the skills for creating your own mutual aid network.

POWER UP! is an ongoing mutual aid collaboration between J-TOWN Action と Solidarity + We The Unhoused  to distribute electricity, hot meals, snacks, PPE and harm reduction supplies to Unhoused residents of Little Tokyo. They distribute these much needed resources that the state doesn’t provide every Saturday afternoon in Toriumi Plaza.

This workshop will take place on Occidental College campus in Mosher Hall. You can find a campus map here. Masks are required for this event and will be provided.

This workshop is part of OXY ARTS' ongoing Community Organizing Workshop Series. Each season, we partner with an organization doing on-the-ground work related to the themes of the exhibition to present on their work and offer hands-on ways to connect and take action.
