Location: Weingart Seminar Room 110
Event Date: Feb. 21, 2023

This workshop series will provide an introduction to sonification of scientific data and models, with an emphasis on geoscientific data. In the first workshop, students will learn about basic concepts and techniques in data sonification through examples across a range of scientific disciplines. Students will then be introduced to geoscientific data from from Earth observation satellites and Earth system models, and will learn how to acquire and work with these data in order to create their own sonifications. The final two workshop sessions will help students create these sonifications, followed by evaluation and discussion of produced works.

Paul Levine is an Earth system scientist with a passion for computer music and multimedia. His work involves assimilating observational data from Earth-orbiting satellites into computer models of terrestrial ecosystems, in order to better understand how ecosystems respond to climatic change and how these responses feed back into the Earth system. He holds a Ph.D. in Earth system science from the University of California, Irvine, and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
