Join us for a screening of the classic debut feature film by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Underlit and engulfed in shadows, Maborosi (1995) is a somber, revelatory story on grief and life after death.

Synopsis:

Despite her outwardly happy and tranquil life as a wife and new mother, Yumiko (Makiko Esumi) is regularly troubled by a horrific nightmare about the death of her grandmother. When tragedy strikes her husband, Ikuo (Tadanobu Asano), the stress forces Yumiko into hermit-like solitude until a kindly widower (Takashi Naitô) attempts to draw her from her shell.

This program is co-presented by OXY ARTS, Occidental College's Media Arts & Culture Department, and Oxy Film Club.
