About the exhibit:
This exhibition presents images from the Joe and Henk Friezer Collection of Photographic Negatives housed in Occidental College’s Special Collections & College Archives. With an estimated 100,000 negatives, the collection documents public life across Northeast Los Angeles over more than fifty years.
Through this selection, focusing on Joe Friezer’s work between 1957-1961, curator Maxim Shapovalov challenges the convention by which photographs are often encountered in isolation, detached from the environments and experiences they once captured. The prints are displayed in close proximity, encouraging viewers to make connections across place, time, and perspective within the flow of everyday space.
Visitors are invited to take in the visual richness of the images and reflect on how photographs shape our perception of everyday history.
The exhibit will run through December 18, 2026 and is open to the public Monday - Friday, 9am to 5pm.
